Fee: $480.00

This three-day course trains individuals who perform asbestos abatement work. It meets both EPA's model accreditation and state requirements for training and licensing as asbestos workers. Participants must score 70 percent or better on a 100-question exam.

Participants must score 70 percent or better on a 100-question exam. Those wishing to become certified as a project designer should also take this course.

This course is intended for persons who have previously taken the Supervisors/Contractors of Asbestos Abatement course. It is important to be aware that annual refresher training must be completed within one year of the expiration date of your original certificate or it will be necessary to take the original course again. During the time your certificate is expired, you will be unable to conduct asbestos abatement activities. To maintain certification, participants must score 70 percent or better on a 25-question refresher exam administered at the conclusion of the course.

This two-day intensive program provides a step-by-step process for developing and implementing a management plan for asbestos in buildings. The course builds on the foundations established in the Inspection and Assessment course. To apply for certification as a Management Planner, participants must be certified as an Asbestos Inspector and score 70 percent or above on a 50-question examination administered at the conclusion of the course.
NOTE: Only registered architects and professional engineers may obtain certification in the state of Mississippi.

Refresher courses are intended for persons who have been certified as Inspectors and Management Planners and are seeking re-accreditation under AHERA. Inspectors must complete a half-day of refresher training. Management planners must complete both the Inspector Refresher and the Management Planner Refresher course, a full day of training. To maintain certification, both Inspectors and Management Planners must score 70 percent or better on a 25-question refresher exam administered at the conclusion of the course.

Designing Asbestos Response Actions

This three-day course is designed for architects and engineers who develop detailed job specifications for an asbestos abatement

project. In addition to providing a review of asbestos issues, the course gives a thorough overview of asbestos abatement projects and applicable regulations. Architects and engineers who complete this course and pass the exam will have met their certification requirements for Project Designer.

Fee: $200.00

All public and private schools (K-12) are required by federal law to designate and train an individual who will ensure the school/school districts compliance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). The Designated Local Education Agency (LEA) Orientation Course is designed for the newly appointed LEA Designee who has limited experience or training under AHERA. It will also be a helpful training session for more experienced LEAs needing a review and update.

Upon completion of this course, the LEA Designee will be able to:

  1. Define the specific tasks required of the school/school district under AHERA.
  2. Identify roles and responsibilities placed on the LEA Designee and other asbestos professionals
  3. Identify and implement the basic tasks required by AHERA.
  4. Gain practical guidance on record keeping
  5. Implement and manage a basic asbestos. control program for the school/school district.
  6. Understand the compliance audit procedures and the relationship between the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) in conducting audits.

    Participants will be provided a certificate of training indicating that they have successfully completed an AHERA Designated LEA Course.

Asbestos Maintenance - Train-the-Trainer

Dates and Locations:
December 3-4, 2008 - Memorial Hall, Mississippi State University- Starkville, Mississippi

Fee: $295.00

AHERA requires training for all members of the maintenance or custodial staff in a school building which contains asbestos. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) also requires training for employees who disturb asbestos during maintenance or custodial activities. These training requirements are virtually identical.

This two-day course is designed to equip persons to conduct this maintenance and custodial training for employees at their location.

Topics and hands-on exercises will include:

  1. Work practices and procedures
  2. Contamination prevention and control methods
  3. Regulation overview
  4. Personal protective equipment

Participants who complete this course will be awarded a certificate of training indicating that they are qualified to teach both the two-hour and/or the 16-hour maintenance and custodial training.

LEA Designees must have completed the AHERA Designated LEA Orientation course prior to attending this course.
