Building Bridges

Summer Institute

What is Building Bridges Summer Institute?

Building Bridges Summer Institute (BBSI) is a weeklong residential program for migrant high school students in Mississippi. It is sponsored by the Mississippi Migrant Education Service Center and hosted at Mississippi State University. The institute provides these students an unique opportunity to experience the college environment by staying in the residence halls while developing academic, social, and leadership skills. Building Bridges is FREE to attend and provides:

  • Free housing and meals

  • Transportation to/from MSU

  • Fun recreational and social activities

  • Workshops and classes for academic, social, and leadership enrichment.

Mission

  • To motivate, empower, and support migrant high school students

  • Enrich academic, leadership and social skills

  • Inform and promote wellness

  • Gain knowledge and skills to increase student confidence and ability to navigate the steps necessary to complete high school and pursue a college education

  • Encourage involvement in community organizations and extra-curricular activities

  • Broaden awareness of career opportunities

What Can I Expect?

  • To meet other migrant high school students from across the state

  • To attend workshops about College Preparation, Health & Wellness, Occupations & Opportunities, Culture, and Motivation

  • To leave encouraged and empowered about your future

Who Can Apply?

To participate in the Building Brides Summer Institute, you must:

  • Be entering 9 -12 grade AND

  • Be an eligible migrant student which means you must have:

    • Moved from one school district to another in the last 3 years to enable you and/or your family to seek or obtain agricultural work AND

    • the type of work was temporary or seasonal and plays a significant part in providing a living for you and/or your family.

Applications must be submitted by June 1, 2009. Students will be notified of acceptance by June 8, 2009.
